Amina Mohamed was sworn in as the new Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture, and Heritage on Tuesday, succeeding Rashid Echesa in a ceremony at Kencom House in Nairobi. Echesa, who had served since 2017, expressed gratitude to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto for his appointment, while wishing his successor success in her new role.
The transition followed an executive order from State House on March 5, 2019, which removed Echesa and appointed Mohamed. The same directive led to the reassignment of six principal secretaries, including Susan N. Mochache and Dr. Ibrahim M. Mohamed, while Fatuma Hirsi was dismissed from her post as Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunication.
President Kenyatta stated the leadership changes aimed to improve government efficiency, transparency, and accountability through a restructured governance framework. George Magoha, chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council, was nominated to replace Mohamed in her previous role.
