Rashid Echesa, former Cabinet Secretary for Sports, officially transferred his responsibilities to Amina Mohammed on March 1, 2019, following a presidential reshuffle. Echesa's departure came after being removed from his post during a cabinet reorganization announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Amina, previously overseeing education, assumed the sports portfolio while Prof George Magoha, chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec), took over her former role. Echesa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating in a social media post: "I once again thank H.E @UKenyatta for considering me among 50 million Kenyans to serve my country in the capacity of a CS. I wish Amb Amina the best in her new role."

Political analysts noted Echesa's dismissal followed public criticism from the president over the deteriorating condition of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga mausoleum in Bondo. The former CS also faced scrutiny after being linked to online allegations involving Senator Cleophas Malala, including the circulation of altered images depicting him with a woman.

Some observers suggested Echesa's removal might signal a broader crackdown on corruption within the cabinet, though no major scandals were directly tied to his tenure. His successor, Amina Mohammed, faced immediate pressure to address ongoing challenges in the sports sector.
