Swiss scientists have uncovered new insights into takotsubo syndrome, a condition causing temporary heart failure following emotional or physical stressors. The study published in the European Heart Journal reveals altered brain activity patterns in patients, suggesting a neurological component to the disorder.
Researchers at University Hospital Zurich analyzed brain scans of 15 patients with the condition, comparing them to 39 healthy controls. They found reduced communication between brain regions responsible for emotional regulation and autonomic functions like heart rate.
Experts note the syndrome, often triggered by events ranging from grief to joyful milestones, mimics heart attack symptoms but lacks blocked blood vessels. While typically reversible, it can be fatal in some cases, affecting approximately 2,500 UK residents annually.
Lead researcher Dr. Jelena Ghadri proposed that emotional processing in the brain may directly influence cardiac function. However, the study could not determine whether brain changes precede or result from the condition, highlighting the need for further research.
