Nyeri Elder Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison for Dealing in Marijuana ¶
On July 29, 2019, Lydia Mumbi Ndirangu, 83, was sentenced to two years in prison for dealing in marijuana in Nyeri County, Kenya.
According to reports, Mumbi was arrested on July 10, 2019, at Muthinga Market in Tetu Sub-County, Nyeri, with 268 grams of marijuana worth KSh 500.
Police reports stated that Mumbi had hidden the marijuana in a bag meant for carrying fruits.
It was revealed that Mumbi was a well-known dealer in the area and had been arrested several times before.
Beatrice Njoroge, a police officer who investigated the case, stated, 'It is sad that her grandchildren are also affected by her marijuana business. Despite being warned and arrested several times, she has not acknowledged the harm caused by her business.'
During her defense, Mumbi claimed that she did not know how the marijuana ended up in her bag when she was arrested.
On July 29, 2019, the court warned Mumbi against re-engaging in the marijuana business, stating that if she did, she would be sent to prison.
