The reporter, Kimiko de Freytas-Tamura, faced intense scrutiny on social media after the article's release, with readers condemning the inclusion of disturbing photographs of victims. She defended the decision by stating, "Please direct your anger to our photo department. Thank you," in response to online complaints.
Following the backlash, de Freytas-Tamura issued an apology on behalf of the newspaper and its photography team, acknowledging the distress caused by the images. She has since transitioned to a London-based position, where she now covers a broad range of international topics including European politics and social issues.
