Deputy President William Ruto’s office has accumulated Sh203 million in unpaid parking fees, making it the largest defaulting entity among government institutions in Nairobi, according to City Hall records.
The debt includes Sh189.08 million for 113 parking spaces on Harambee Avenue and Sh14.06 million for 10 slots along Parliament Lane, spanning from 2014. The office operates under an annual budget of Sh880 million.
City Hall reported that 11 government agencies collectively owe Sh678 million in parking charges. Director of Parking Tom Tinega stated that demand notices have been issued to defaulters, though some entities like the High Court and Central Bank of Kenya remain unpaid.
The High Court owes Sh105.1 million for 72 spaces in Milimani since 2012, while the Central Bank has yet to settle Sh77.2 million for 46 slots from the same period. Tinega noted that Governor Mike Sonko may intervene to resolve the outstanding debts.
Other institutions, including the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and Ministry of Finance, have not paid Sh42.3 million for 64 parking spaces since 1999. City Hall’s inability to meet parking revenue targets since 2013 exacerbates the financial strain.
