The global mobile industry contributed $3.9 trillion to the world economy in 2018, representing 4.6% of global GDP and supporting over 32 million jobs directly or indirectly.
GSMA Intelligence data projects 5 billion people—60% of the global population—will be active mobile internet users by 2025, with Kenya emerging as a key growth market.
A GSMA report highlighted Kenya's status as Sub-Saharan Africa's second-most-improved mobile sector, following Cameroon. This progress stems from expanded infrastructure and reduced service costs. Electricity access increased from 30% in 2014 to over 50% by 2018, while 3G network coverage rose to 85% of Kenyans in 2017 from 67% in 2014.
Competition among providers has significantly lowered data prices, boosting mobile internet adoption. The surge in Swahili-language online content further drives usage, with 4 million new users connecting between 2014 and 2017, raising overall adoption to 24%.
Kenya now has 42.2 million active internet subscribers. Safaricom leads with 69.7% market share as of September 2018, followed by Airtel (21.9%) and Telkom Kenya (7.7%).
