A Tokyo court has released Carlos Ghosn, former chairman of Nissan Motor Co Ltd, on bail following over three months in custody on allegations of financial misconduct, according to his legal team. The 1 billion yen ($8.94 million) bail condition was set for the executive, who has faced detention since late November 2018.
Ghosn, who previously led Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors Corp, and Renault SA, is accused of underreporting his compensation at Nissan through 2018. He also faces charges of aggravated breach of trust. The ex-chairman has consistently denied all allegations.
The court's decision follows statements from Ghosn's newly appointed legal team, who expressed confidence in securing his release through a commitment to surveillance measures. His potential release could occur as early as the day of the court ruling.
