Five individuals, including a pilot associated with Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto, lost their lives when a helicopter crashed in Lake Turkana on Sunday night. The incident triggered an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident.
Emergency responders located the wreckage on Central Island after receiving distress signals from the aircraft, which had been returning to Lobolo camp when it disappeared from radar. A search team recovered five bodies, though only two were immediately identifiable, according to Kenya Wildlife Service officials.
Captain Marious Magonga, the pilot, was operating the aircraft at the time of the crash. Authorities confirmed that a second helicopter in the same flight did not experience issues. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority activated a search and rescue mission shortly after receiving the distress call, with teams arriving on the island by 11:20 PM and locating the wreckage at 3:20 AM.
The crash occurred less than a month after a separate aviation incident in Kericho that also resulted in fatalities. KIDL Helicopters, the operator, expressed condolences to the families of the victims, including Magonga and four American tourists.
