President Uhuru Kenyatta's decision to remove Rashid Echesa as Sports Cabinet Secretary has triggered political tensions in western Kenya, where the move has been framed as part of broader factional struggles within the Jubilee Party.
Echesa's dismissal, announced through an Executive Order published last Friday, saw his portfolio transferred to Amina Mohamed, who previously held the Education portfolio. The reshuffle also placed George Magoha, chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council, into the Sports Ministry.
The sacking intensified pressure from regional allies of Deputy President William Ruto, who accused the administration of undermining Western Kenya's political influence. Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali, a key Ruto ally, warned that the region might reconsider its support for Jubilee if the government fails to clarify the reasons behind Echesa's removal.
"We demand transparency. If the government does not explain the decision, we will not accept it and will demonstrate our stance at the polls," Washiali stated, referencing the alleged 'handshake' between Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga to marginalize Western leaders.
Echesa, who attended a funeral in Matungu over the weekend, claimed he was unaware of the rationale for his dismissal. "I am still waiting for an explanation. My supporters should not worry—I will continue campaigning for Ruto after handing over the portfolio," he said.
Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa suggested the reshuffle aimed to disrupt pro-Ruto political campaigns, while Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli accused critics of the president of exploiting ethnic divisions for personal gain.
