Western Kenya's political landscape shifted sharply following the removal of Rashid Echesa as Sports Cabinet Secretary, triggering concerns within the Jubilee Party about maintaining its electoral base.
Echesa's dismissal, outlined in an Executive Order issued by President Uhuru Kenyatta, transferred his responsibilities to Amina Mohamed, who simultaneously moved from Education to the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) leadership role.
The abrupt change intensified scrutiny from regional allies, particularly in Echesa's home constituency. Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali, a close associate of Deputy President William Ruto, criticized the decision as part of a broader political strategy, alleging collaboration between Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga to undermine western leaders.
"We demand transparency. If the government refuses to explain, we will not remain silent," Washiali stated, referencing the recent removal of Senate Minority Leader Moses Wetang'ula as evidence of a coordinated effort. He emphasized that Echesa's Sports Ministry had no history of corruption, questioning why the president did not consult regional leaders before the decision.
Echesa, during a funeral in Matungu, expressed confusion over his dismissal but pledged continued support for Ruto. "I await an explanation. My supporters should not worry; I will campaign for Ruto after handing over," he said. Meanwhile, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa suggested the sacking aimed to disrupt pro-Ruto campaigns.
Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli countered by accusing critics of exploiting ethnic divisions for personal gain, highlighting the deepening political tensions in the region.
