The National Confederation Matatu Transporters (NCMT) has urged Nairobi's court to recognize the Globe Roundabout as a designated holding area for matatus, aiming to alleviate central business district congestion, according to court filings.
The group revealed ongoing discussions with City Hall about a potential out-of-court resolution, detailing plans to upgrade the roundabout and develop a parking facility along Kirinyaga Road to accommodate both long- and short-distance vehicles.
In a 2018 legal challenge, NCMT and businessman Paul Kobia contested Governor Mike Sonko's downtown matatu ban, which was temporarily halted by Justice Wilfrida Okwany. The transport association now advocates for modern traffic management systems, including a command center with radio communication to support traffic police efforts.
NCMT attributed worsening congestion to urban population growth and rising public transport demand, rejecting claims that City Hall is solely responsible. It also called for stricter enforcement against double parking and repairs to underused lanes for municipal vehicle use.
