The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal intervened to block Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa's expulsion from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), granting her temporary reprieve ahead of a scheduled hearing.
The tribunal's deputy registrar halted ODM's efforts to remove Jumwa from its membership list on Monday, setting an inter partes hearing for March 8. This follows a February 5 ruling by ODM's National Governing Council to expel Jumwa over alleged disloyalty, while sparing her Msambweni counterpart Suleiman Dori after he submitted an apology to party leader Edwin Sifuna.
Jumwa faced expulsion for allegedly campaigning for the Democratic Party's Raila Odinga to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022. Her lawyer, Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, secured interim court orders preventing ODM and the Registrar of Political Parties from proceeding with her removal. The party had planned to notify the National Assembly Speaker to trigger a by-election in her constituency.
