Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Alhaji Babalele Abdullahi, a relative of presidential runner-up Atiku Abubakar, and his lawyer Uyi Osagie, alleging money laundering involving 150 million euros.
Abdullahi, who served as finance director for Abubakar's 2019 campaign, was detained in Abuja on February 18. His arrest followed that of Osagie, who was raided in Lagos days earlier. EFCC officials confirmed investigations but did not detail charges against either individual.
Abubakar's campaign team accused authorities of targeting his allies to undermine his political influence. 'This is an orchestrated campaign to intimidate Atiku Abubakar,' said spokesperson Boladele Adekoya.
The arrests occurred amid unresolved disputes over Nigeria's February 23 presidential election, which saw President Muhammadu Buhari secure a second term. Abubakar contested the results, calling the vote a 'sham' and alleging widespread fraud. His Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of manipulating the outcome.
The Independent National Electoral Commission delayed the vote by a week, citing logistical issues. While Buhari won 56% of the vote, observers noted 53 deaths and reports of voter intimidation during the election. Governorship and state assembly polls are scheduled for Saturday.
