The chief executive of MTN Uganda has filed a legal challenge against his deportation, alleging the action was unlawful and arbitrary.
Wim Vanhelleputte, a Belgian national married to Ugandan citizen Babra Adoso Vanhelleputte since 2000, claims he has never violated Ugandan laws. His affidavit, obtained by Daily Monitor, states he has resided in Uganda since 1993 and maintains a family with two children born in the country.
Vanhelleputte argues his deportation by Interior Minister Jeje Odongo lacked legal justification. He seeks judicial review to quash the removal, demand compensation for unlawful detention, and secure a declaration that the process violated due process rights.
The legal action coincides with reports of MTN Group CEO Rob Shuter attending the Africa Now Summit in Kampala, where Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni previously discussed stock market listing opportunities for the telecom company.
Other attendees at the March 12-13 summit include Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, as the event focuses on regional integration and economic growth.
