Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter rejected claims of community targeting in anti-corruption efforts during a 2019 parliamentary address, focusing instead on fiscal irregularities in infrastructure projects.
Financial Discrepancies Highlighted ¶
Keter challenged the Deputy President’s understanding of the Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal, citing conflicting financial reports. "The Treasury Cabinet Secretary cited Sh20 billion in question, but even a reduced figure of Sh7 billion is not trivial. It could fund 200 kilometers of road construction," he stated.
Calls for Project Audits ¶
The MP criticized the high costs of dam construction, urging the Auditor General’s office to conduct pre-implementation audits. "Kenya’s dam projects involve exorbitant sums that defy logic. We must investigate why these ventures attract political suppliers and inflate expenses," Keter said.
National Unity and Corruption Fight ¶
Keter emphasized the role of national unity in combating corruption, praising the handshake initiative. "Only through solidarity can we address corruption and terrorism. President Uhuru Kenyatta’s efforts have united Kenyans across faiths," he added.
He also noted that stalled projects in the Rift Valley region had benefited certain individuals, with a related 2019 report detailing an Italian firm’s movement to a dam site under investigation.
