Kenyans and international figures expressed shock and sorrow following the death of Captain Mario Magonga, a pilot who perished in a helicopter crash near Turkana on Sunday. Four Americans were also killed in the incident, which occurred at Lobolo in Central Island National Park.
William Kabogo, former Kiambu governor, paid tribute to Magonga on social media, recalling his professionalism and long tenure with the governor. "May his soul rest in eternal peace," Kabogo wrote, describing Magonga as a disciplined and polite pilot.
Social media reactions highlighted both grief and controversy. While many mourned the loss, user @254Realist criticized Kenyans for focusing on Magonga’s association with Deputy President William Ruto rather than his family. "A husband/father dies and the most important part is he is DP Ruto’s pilot," the tweet read, urging Kenyans to "wake up."
Richard Onyonka, Kitutu Chache South MP and Magonga’s cousin, called for an investigation into the crash. Speaking on NTV’s AMLive, he emphasized the need for aviation industry reforms. "We must ensure we operate within international best practices," Onyonka stated, noting Magonga’s frequent flights with the deputy president.
Magonga, an ex-military pilot from Kisii County, was remembered by colleagues and friends. Henry Otiende described him as a lifelong friend, while Abuga Makori expressed devastation over losing a scheduled meeting with the pilot. Magonga, a Cardinal Otunga High School alumnus, leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication.
