Joey Muthengi, a former anchor with Citizen TV, disclosed in a recent interview that she experienced suicidal ideation following her ex-boyfriend's marriage, which triggered a prolonged period of depression.
The media personality described how her relationship with a white partner began during high school and initially thrived despite geographical and scheduling challenges. However, the dynamic shifted after she secured a position at Citizen TV in 2016, which she viewed as a career milestone.
"The love of my life was a white man. I knew him since high school. We were perfect but the logistics around our lives just weren’t matching," Muthengi said. "We were always traveling on different time zones, different locations, and I was so keen on climbing the career ladder."
After achieving professional success, Muthengi reconnected with her former partner and learned of his marriage through Facebook. "When I finally got to Citizen TV, when I was finally feeling like 'I've sort of 'made it,' I started looking for him again and then I found out he got married... through Facebook of all the places," she recalled.
The revelation plunged her into depression, exacerbated by a lack of familial support. "I was quite depressed for a long time. Even my family couldn’t understand and kept asking 'what is it about this guy?'" she added.
Muthengi has since transitioned to working at the Voice of America radio station.
