Chinese scientists from Yangzhou University have developed a solar-powered water purification system capable of eliminating 99.9999% of bacteria, including E. coli, in 30 minutes. The technology employs graphitic carbon nitride sheets as a photo-catalyst, which generate reactive oxygen compounds when exposed to sunlight to neutralize contaminants.
Published in the journal Chem, the system represents an advancement over existing methods that often leave harmful chemical by-products or require longer treatment times. Researchers estimate the process can provide daily drinking water for four people using a single 10-liter container, with no reported toxic residues.
World Health Organization data highlights the urgency of such innovations, as waterborne diseases cause 2.2 million deaths annually and 82 million disability-adjusted life years lost. The system's low cost and portability could address challenges in rural and urban areas where 1.1 billion people lack improved water sources.
Key factors in home water treatment include taste, convenience, affordability, and cultural acceptance. Positive messaging about health benefits and ease of use significantly influences adoption rates, according to WHO research.
While similar low-cost solutions exist, such as ceramic pot filters priced at $3 annually, widespread implementation remains hindered by infrastructure and education gaps. The Yangzhou team is now working on portable designs for deployment in high-risk regions.
A 2018 study on Tanzanian highland communities revealed similar challenges, with rural populations facing declining water quality from springs and rivers. The new technology could offer a scalable alternative to traditional collection methods.
