Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko marked his birthday on Sunday, but the occasion was overshadowed by the passing of his grandmother, Fatuma Swaleh Ali, who collapsed and died during the celebrations.
Sonko described his grandmother as a pivotal figure who inspired multiple generations. Earlier that day, he shared a heartfelt message for his mother, Saumu Mbuvi, on social media.
"On such a wonderful day at exactly 5:23pm, my all time woman crush, Saumu Mbuvi, brought forth into the world a bouncing baby boy in the name of Mike Mbuvi Sonko. I’m now a year older and I have another reason to celebrate life. Thank you all for the birthday wishes."
Photos from the governor's lavish birthday gathering at his residence were shared publicly. The event coincided with the tragic loss of his family matriarch.
