Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez faces a potential two-month absence after suffering a medial ligament strain during a 3-2 win against Southampton on Saturday.
The injury occurred seven minutes into the second half when Sanchez collided with Southampton's Jan Bednarek. Chilean national team physio Pedro Onate confirmed the forward would be unavailable for six to eight weeks but expressed confidence he would recover in time for the Copa America.
"We spoke to the player and he had scans on the injury (on Sunday), he will be available for the Copa America, but will be unavailable to play for between six and eight weeks. The medial ligament strain is an annoying injury but not such a complex one,"
Sanchez's absence complicates manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans ahead of the Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain, as the club already faces multiple injuries. Paul Pogba is suspended, while Juan Mata, Antonio Valencia, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard, and Matteo Darmian are sidelined. Phil Jones is unwell, and Anthony Martial is unlikely to feature.
"For sure it's very worrying, these are situations that happen in football. We hope he overcomes this very quickly because he has all the quality, a track record, experience and quality to assert himself. I hope we can enjoy the Alexis we all knew again,"
Chilean national team coach Reinaldo Rueda emphasized the importance of Sanchez's recovery, citing his proven capabilities despite his recent inconsistent form for Manchester United.
