Pumwani Maternity Hospital is set to introduce general outpatient medical services, aiming to reduce patient overload at Nairobi's major healthcare facilities, including Mama Lucy Hospital, Mbagathi, and Kenyatta National Hospital, according to administrator Geoffrey Mosiria.
Mosiria confirmed the expansion, stating the hospital has completed infrastructure upgrades, including a dedicated building for outpatient care. Ward 7 has been upgraded to accommodate both male and female patients, he added.
The administrator addressed persistent allegations of baby theft at the facility, noting that staff suspected of misconduct were transferred following a review. "We could not continue with this negativity," Mosiria said. "I involved our chief officer and transferred all of them, despite threats to my safety."
Recent operational data shows Pumwani now handles 80 to 120 daily deliveries, up from 50-80 before a 2018 incident involving the discovery of 12 bodies at the facility. Mosiria reported a significant decline in mortality rates, with only one weekly death recorded and the new morgue rarely used.
