Waititu and Wife Arrested for Failing to Pay Bail ¶
On July 30, 2019, Ferdinand Waititu, the embattled Governor of Kiambu, and his wife Susan Ndung'u were arrested after failing to pay their bail of KSh 15 million and KSh 4 million respectively.
Waititu was taken to Viwandani Prison, while his wife was taken to Lang'ata Women's Prison.
According to reports, the Governor was given conditions when he was released on bail, including not to step foot in his office at the Kiambu County headquarters until the case against him is heard and determined.
The Governor is facing a case of misappropriation of county funds, where he is accused of awarding a KSh 588 million tender to Saika Two Estate Developers Limited, a company linked to him and his wife.
Failure to pay the bail by July 31, 2019, would have been the fourth time for Waititu and his wife to be arrested and taken to prison without their consent, following their failure to appear before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on July 28, 2019.
However, the power struggle and corruption in Kiambu may be about to take a new turn, following the announcement by the Deputy Governor, James Nyoro, that he will take over the county.
