Justice John Onyiego of Nairobi's High Court reduced the sentence of former TNA Senator Joy Gwendo, who was convicted of embezzling Sh1.7 million. The judge replaced the original two-year jail term with a fine of Sh660,000 or one year in prison, citing procedural errors in the trial magistrate's decision.

The ruling followed the quashing of Gwendo's initial conviction, which had imposed a mandatory jail sentence without allowing for a financial penalty. The court emphasized that sentencing guidelines require judges to consider alternative punishments when appropriate.

A photo of Gwendo in court on February 27, 2019, was published alongside the report. The case highlights ongoing scrutiny of financial misconduct by public officials in Kenya.
