Local volleyball coaches have praised a three-day FIVB-led coaching seminar in Nairobi as critical preparation for upcoming competitions. The event, led by Italian instructor Mauro Berruto and sponsored by KCB in partnership with the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), brought together 30 local and 40 international coaches from across Africa.
Participants highlighted the value of practical training sessions, including those involving Kenya Prisons' team. Paul Muthinja, a coach with Kenya Prisons, noted that Berruto's focus on细节 has shifted their perspective on training methods. "We are humbled our side is getting first-hand practice under Berruto. However, the official is making things we take for granted count," Muthinja said.
Denis Mokua, Muthinja's assistant, emphasized the seminar's impact on simplifying complex techniques. "He is making everything look so easy in the training. Something like jump service where many players are not confident to pursue, he has made it look like a regular routine drill," Mokua added.
Alisha Aliwa, coach of the Kenya Defence Forces' women's team, expressed optimism about applying new skills ahead of the KVF national league. "Berruto’s presence has breathed new life into our coaching approach. We intend to use these techniques to improve performance," she said.
Cathrine Mabwi, a former under-23 women's coach, shared insights on long-term development. "Berruto has taught us that it's okay not to record good results at the start of a coaching career, but positive outcomes will come with time," she noted. Unattached coach Halima Bakari added: "Confidence starts with the coach, not just the players."
