The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) launched a cashless contribution system in March 2019, partnering with Safaricom to allow members to remit payments via M-PESA. The initiative, unveiled at NSSF headquarters, aligns with similar digital payment models used by entities like the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
Dr. Julius Karangi, NSSF Board Chairman, emphasized the project's role in modernizing operations. "The platform will make contributing to NSSF easy and effortless. We are striving to enhance the member experience through upcoming initiatives," he stated during the announcement.
Members can now use M-PESA's paybill feature with PayBill Number 333300, linking their NSSF account number for transactions. This eliminates the need for in-person visits to NSSF offices. Online tracking via NSSF's portal or mobile app is available for all contributions, with new members able to register through digital channels.
Rita Okuthe, Safaricom's Chief Enterprise Business Officer, highlighted the partnership's efficiency benefits. "Organizations with under 20 employees can use M-PESA, provided payroll data is submitted through the portal first," she said, noting the system reduces cash handling burdens.
