Three members of the Nyumba Kumi Initiative, including an assistant chief, are under investigation for the fatal beating of Ibrahim Mwaniki in Kiangungi village, Kirinyaga County.
The suspects are accused of assaulting Mwaniki and his friend with clubs on the night of February 28, leading to Mwaniki's death at home shortly after the attack. Local residents claim the victims were reportedly drunk and causing disturbances when confronted by the suspects.
Embu East Deputy Commissioner Leonard Mugute confirmed the police probe, stating, "Those involved in the killing will be arrested and prosecuted. I urge relatives and residents to remain calm." The official emphasized that Nyumba Kumi members are tasked with reporting wrongdoing to authorities, not administering vigilante justice.
A witness, Levi Bahati, condemned the attack: "They brutally killed our colleague and they should face the law." Protests erupted in the area following the incident, with residents demanding accountability. Mugute later requested family members to provide statements at the local police station.
