National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga accused Kenyan churches of complicity in corruption during a 2019 funeral service in Kisumu, claiming they knowingly accepted illicit funds from politicians including Deputy President William Ruto.

Odinga specifically alleged Ruto's involvement in the 2012 Sh21 billion Arror and Kamwerer dams scandal, stating churches facilitated the embezzlement by accepting large sums of money. 'They sit down when money is brought to them in huge sacks, claiming these leaders are working hard and investing in heaven,' he said.

The remarks came as Odinga called for accountability, declaring, 'If you stole you stole alone so carry your own cross.' The 2012 dam scandal remains a contentious issue in Kenyan politics, with ongoing investigations into the misuse of public funds.
