COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has called on Jubilee Majority Whip Benjamin Washiali to resign over the dismissal of Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa, accusing Western region leaders of prioritizing self-interests. Echesa was removed from his post during a recent Cabinet reshuffle, with former Education CS Amina Mohammed taking his place. Washiali, a Mumias West MP, condemned the move as a blow to the Luhya community, but Atwoli rejected the criticism, stating that those opposing the decision were "auctioning Luhyas for selfish gains."
Atwoli challenged Washiali to step down from his parliamentary role if he disagreed with the sacking, arguing that Jubilee campaign leaders in the West had misled the president. "If Washiali is man enough, let him quit his Majority Whip position in protest over the sacking of Echesa," Atwoli said. "Washiali and others who led Jubilee campaigns in Western should be ashamed for misleading the President," he added.
