The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has launched a new system allowing members to remit contributions via M-Pesa, marking a shift toward cashless operations. The initiative will implement a fully automated process across all branches, focusing on improving service efficiency and member convenience.
NSSF Chairman Gen. (Rtd) Dr. Julius Karangi emphasized the fund’s commitment to modernizing its services, stating, "The platform we are launching today will make contributing to NSSF easy and effortless. We are striving to enhance the member experience through initiatives that will roll out in the coming months."
Safaricom, partnering with NSSF, highlighted the benefits of digitization. Rita Okuthe, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, noted, "This partnership allows NSSF and its members to enjoy increased operational efficiency by reducing time spent on cash handling and reconciliation."
Employers with 20 or fewer staff can now process employee contributions through M-Pesa. The process involves uploading payroll data to the NSSF portal, generating a Unique Payment Number (UPN), and entering it as the account number during transactions.
The fund also announced that all return filings will now be conducted online. Central Bank data from December 2018 showed mobile payments account for 90% of cashless transactions in Kenya, underscoring the popularity of digital solutions. A GSMA report cited cost savings of over 75% for citizens using mobile payments for government services.
