Nyeri Senior Magistrate Pauline Omungala has been ordered to remain in custody for nine days as investigators probe her involvement in the 2019 murder of her husband, lawyer Robert Chesang. The magistrate appeared in court with three other suspects at Mavoko Law Courts on March 4, 2019.
A retired senior police officer was detained in Baragoi, Samburu County, and transported to Nairobi on Sunday. Authorities allege the former officer served as a critical link between Omungala and the perpetrators of the crime.
Chesang, 48, was fatally shot seven times at his home in Moke Estate, Lukenya, on February 17, 2019. A postmortem report confirmed he died from severe hemorrhaging. The victim had been living in a hotel for months after his wife allegedly forced him out of their marital home, according to court records.
Chesang had moved into the Lukenya residence in December 2018 following his transfer to Nyeri. In protection-from-domestic-violence filings, he claimed his wife's violent behavior led to police harassment and intimidation. His case was transferred to Machakos Chief Magistrate Court after he expressed distrust in local law enforcement, though the court later permitted him to retrieve personal belongings from the home.
