Nandi County has escalated regional tensions by asserting administrative control over markets in Kisumu and Vihiga counties, including Gambogi and Serem markets. The move follows a March 2019 meeting between county officials and Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangí, who mediated discussions on resolving border disputes.

The contested areas include border towns in Kisumu such as Chemelil, Muhoroni, and Kibos, as well as markets along the Kisumu-Kakamega road. Vihiga Governor Wilber Otichillo and Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o were among regional leaders who participated in earlier talks with Nandi Governor Stephen Sang at the Nandi Hills Bears Club.

Critics argue Nandi Governor Stephen Sang is exploiting the dispute for political gain, urging a focus on collaborative solutions. The conflict highlights longstanding territorial disagreements between the counties, with no immediate resolution in sight.
