Tanna and Sons Limited, an Asian-owned company in Kitale, is embroiled in a legal dispute over alleged unauthorized claims to four plots in the central business district that belong to Muliro market. The conflict centers on a 1999 title deed for plot No 4/364, which officials say was fraudulently obtained from the Ministry of Lands.
According to documents reviewed by Weekly Citizen, the land in question was originally part of the old Kitale Police Station. After the station relocated, Tanna and Sons allegedly manipulated records to secure the plot, which was later subdivided into four parcels (439, 440, 441, and 442) for local use. Market representatives Ronald Wanjala and Ben Simiyu denied Tanna's claims, stating the company's referenced plot does not exist in official records.
The dispute has led to construction blockades, with Tanna allegedly deploying armed police to prevent development. A 2018 fire destroyed existing structures at the former police site, valued at millions of shillings. Muliro market owners allege that construction materials worth over Sh300,000 vanished under Tanna's security, holding Kitale OCS accountable for losses. The case remains pending in court.
