Former Nissan Motor Co Ltd chairman Carlos Ghosn's legal team has signaled renewed hope for his release from Japanese detention, with his current attorney stating recent developments could lead to bail in the coming weeks.
Junichiro Hironaka, who took over representation from Motonari Otsuru last month, told reporters, "I believe it's possible he could be released in the near future." The statement marks a shift from his predecessor's more cautious stance on the matter.
Ghosn has remained in custody since his arrest in November 2018 on charges of financial misconduct, including underreporting income and misusing company funds. His legal team has consistently denied the allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings.
