Two French-led consortia are in the final stages of competing for a Sh180 billion highway project in Kenya, with the winning bidder expected to be revealed in 2019. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) finalized evaluations of bids submitted by four shortlisted consortia, though only two ultimately submitted proposals.
Director-General Peter Mundinia confirmed that the selected contractor will be responsible for designing, financing, constructing, operating, and maintaining the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway. A reserve bidder will also be chosen to ensure project continuity if needed.
The winning consortium must meet local participation requirements. This follows government plans to compensate 44 landowners in Kiambu County for parcels along the Limuru-Kamirithu stretch of the highway, as outlined in a February 22 gazette notice by former National Land Commission chairman Muhammad Swazuri.
The first bidding group includes Aiim, Egis, Mota-Engil, and Orascom, while the second consists of Vinci Highways SAS, Meridian Infrastructure Africa Fund, and Vinci Concessions SAS.
