Meng's lawsuit states that Canadian officials seized her electronic devices, extracted passwords, and reviewed their contents without prior notification of her arrest. The filing argues this process violated her rights under Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms by delaying her access to legal counsel for three hours after initial detention.
The arrest, requested by U.S. authorities for potential extradition, occurred on December 1, 2018, during a layover. Chinese officials immediately criticized the detention as politically motivated, later detaining Canadian citizens in what many viewed as a retaliatory measure. Meng remains in Vancouver under bail conditions.
