Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko detailed an incident in 2008 where his wife and children narrowly escaped injury after being targeted by Flying Squad officers. The event occurred when Primrose Mbuvi, his spouse, was driving a Range Rover (KAQ 535W) purchased from Deputy President William Ruto through dealer Ng’ang’a Mundia for Ksh7.5 million.
The vehicle, originally owned by former President Daniel Moi, had been involved in an accident and was later sold. Media reports at the time indicated the car had been stolen from a car yard, prompting police to investigate its whereabouts.
During a shopping trip, Mbuvi’s vehicle was halted by officers she initially believed to be carjackers. When she attempted to flee, the officers opened fire. The armored car prevented injuries, though the family was later detained at Buru Buru Police Station. After verifying ownership documents, they were released.
Sonko used the incident to caution citizens about the dangers of confronting police, stating, "If a police officer stops your car, comply with the order and stop. As a family we glorify the name of the living God for this day."
