Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko recounted a 2008 incident where his family survived a police shooting after acquiring a vehicle from Deputy President William Ruto.
The Range Rover (KAQ 535W) was purchased by Sonko's wife, Primrose Mbuvi, through dealer Ng’ang’a Mundia for Ksh7.5 million. The vehicle had previously belonged to former President Daniel Moi, who had sold it after an accident. Media reports at the time indicated the car had been stolen from a car yard, prompting police to search for it.
During a shopping trip, Mbuvi was stopped by Flying Squad officers who she initially mistook for carjackers. When she attempted to flee, officers opened fire on the armored vehicle. No one was injured. The family was arrested, taken to Buru Buru Police Station, and later released after verifying ownership documents.
Sonko used the incident to highlight risks Kenyans face from police actions. "If a police officer stops your car, comply with the order and stop," he advised. "We glorify the name of the living God for this day," he concluded.
