Deputy President William Ruto's pilot, Captain Mario Magonga, died in a helicopter crash in Turkana on March 3, 2019, while transporting four U.S. citizens. The aircraft disappeared from radar that day, and its wreckage was discovered the following morning at 4 a.m. near Lobolo in Central Island National Park.
Magonga, an experienced former military pilot from Nyamataro, Kitutu Chache South, Kisii County, was identified as the sole Kenyan among the victims. He was the first cousin of local MP Richard Onyonka and the son of retired Brigadier (rtd) Magonga. The crash occurred hours after the helicopter lost contact on March 3, with recovery efforts concluding on March 4.
