However, significant gaps persist in Kenya's digital cartography, with many urban areas lacking basic infrastructure data compared to Western cities.
A pilot project in Makueni County demonstrated how community-driven mapping can improve transparency. With support from the World Bank and local organization Map Kibera Trust, youth volunteers used Open Data Kit (ODK) to collect GPS coordinates of schools, health facilities, and other public assets. This data was integrated into OSM, creating detailed maps that verify project implementations.
Participatory budgeting processes benefit from digital mapping by providing real-time spatial data. While some counties still use manual methods like paper maps, transitioning to digital systems enhances decision-making accuracy. GIS tools enable counties to maintain up-to-date web maps accessible to citizens, with potential for community printing during planning meetings.
Experts note that investing in OSM-based mapping requires lower costs than proprietary systems. Training local officials and citizens ensures sustainable updates, fostering equitable resource distribution and improved public communication through accessible digital infrastructure.
