Ethiopian athlete Yomif Kejelcha set a new world indoor mile record on Sunday with a time of 3 minutes 47.01 seconds at the Bruce Lehane Invitational in Boston.

The 21-year-old surpassed a record that predates his own birth, the 3:48.45 mark set by Morocco's Hicham El Gerrouj on February 12, 1997.

This marked the third attempt for Kejelcha to break the indoor mile record, following near-misses in prior competitions.

He had previously come close to the record, finishing 0.01 seconds short at the Millrose Games with a time of 3:48.46, and later fell just short in the 1,500m event in Birmingham.

Kejelcha aimed to also break the indoor 1,500m record but recorded a time of 3:31.25, the third-fastest in history.
