South African opposition leader Julius Malema, founder of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) since 2012, extended birthday wishes to Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko through a public statement. The EFF chief emphasized his lack of personal acquaintance with Sonko but highlighted growing interest in the Kenyan leader following media coverage and international recognition.
Malema made the remarks during a public address in KwaZulu-Natal, noting that Kenyan leaders like Raila Odinga have historically drawn attention. He specifically cited Oprah Winfrey's endorsement of Sonko after the governor's UN speech in 2019, which positioned him as a representative of African cities. 'When a figure like Oprah acknowledges someone, it carries significant weight,' Malema stated.
The opposition leader announced plans to visit Kenya before year's end, facilitated by an invitation from politician Babu Owino. Malema also mentioned upcoming travels to Uganda, expressing no reservations about engaging with regional leaders despite political differences. 'Africa is our home, and we don't fear any challenges,' he added.
