In a 2019 analysis, John Barorot, Telkom Kenya's Chief Technology and Information Officer, outlined Kenya's evolving mobile technology landscape, emphasizing the shift from basic services to advanced digital ecosystems. The country's transition from GPRS to 4G and the emergence of 5G networks have enabled innovations like AI, remote healthcare, and automated systems, with expectations of autonomous vehicles and real-time medical procedures through enhanced speed and reduced latency.

Barorot highlighted that mobile technology's growth hinges on integrating hardware, network infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks. He noted the Communication Authority of Kenya's (CA) efforts to expand coverage through telco investments in base stations, aiming to connect 300,000 underserved citizens. A Universal Service Fund program supports rural ICT access, addressing digital infrastructure disparities.

The analysis stressed the importance of collaboration among device manufacturers, telcos, and regulators. Barorot emphasized sustained investment to align Kenya's digital progress with national development goals, citing the potential of IoT and 5G to transform sectors like transportation, health, banking, and agriculture.
