Ugandan forward Umaru Kasumba expressed confidence in his bid for the Golden Boot after scoring a decisive penalty in Sofapaka's 1-0 victory over KCB at Kenyatta Stadium on Saturday. The goal, which came in the 89th minute, elevated Kasumba's season tally to seven goals, placing him one behind leader Allan Wanga as the 2009 league champions moved to fourth with 27 points.
Kasumba acknowledged KCB's dominance in the first half but emphasized the significance of the win. 'I didn't want to reveal my target for the season, but securing these three points has forced me to speak openly. I believe this is my season to claim the Golden Boot despite the competition,' he said.
KCB controlled possession early, with forward Ezekiel Odera testing goalkeeper Justin Ndikumana multiple times. Ndikumana made three key saves in the first half, including denying Odera's header and Chrispinus Onyango's attempt. Sofapaka's first chance came in the sixth minute when Brian Magonya's free-kick was poorly struck by John Avire.
Despite KCB's pressure, Sofapaka's defense held until Kasumba's 89th-minute penalty sealed the win. Coach John Baraza credited his team's resilience, stating, 'We were outplayed but happy to win. We contained their pressure and regained our winning form.' KCB assistant coach Sammy Omollo lamented missed opportunities, saying, 'We created chances and dominated but were unlucky in the final third.'
