Six-foot-tall Form Four student Himdat Mohammed from Lamu made headlines at Kwale County Secondary Schools Term One games, setting a long jump record and leading Kaya Tiwi Girls to a basketball championship on March 3, 2019.
Mohammed secured the girls’ long jump title with a leap of 10.5 meters, a new county benchmark. Later that day, she switched to basketball, scoring 46 points to help Kaya Tiwi defeat Vugurungani 160-02 in the final. The match was halted early in the fourth quarter due to a filled scoresheet.
"I’m enjoying every moment here with a peaceful learning environment and a good atmosphere for sports which has motivated me to compete in athletics and basketball," Mohammed said, crediting her school principal, Robert Aran Maima, for providing educational opportunities.
In semifinals, Kaya Tiwi defeated Matuga Girls 146-0, with Mohammed contributing 43 points. Barbra Diana (25 points) and Valery Akinyi (20 points) also stood out. Vugurungani advanced to the final after beating Kingwede 12-04.
Shimba Hills Secondary emerged as the overall winner, claiming boys’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ handball, and sevens rugby titles. They defeated Kwale High 66-29 in the boys’ basketball final and edged Kaya Tiwi 21-6 in the sevens rugby championship.
Matuga Girls reclaimed the girls’ hockey title, while Kinango Secondary narrowly beat Mazeras Boys 3-1 in a penalty shootout. In Mombasa, Aga Khan Academy teams retained their basketball titles, defeating Mombasa Baptist 74-51 and Mama Ngina Girls 42-20.
