Members of Parliament have demanded Deputy President William Ruto explain his involvement in the 2019 investigation into alleged mismanagement of Ksh21 billion in dam construction projects, while questioning his interference in government operations.
The statement, signed by representatives from multiple constituencies, criticized Ruto for contradicting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) findings and positioning himself as a spokesperson for ministries involved in the scandal. The MPs highlighted that revelations about the financial irregularities originated from within the government, not the opposition, as Ruto claimed.
The DCI confirmed it is investigating losses exceeding Ksh21 billion in dam construction, yet Ruto has disputed these findings, asserting the loss amounted to only Ksh7 billion. The MPs challenged Ruto to clarify his interest in the case and whether he trusts the DCI’s capacity to conduct investigations.
They also urged him to separate his 2022 presidential ambitions from the public’s demand for an honest government, noting that Kenyans expect accountability. The statement emphasized that Ruto’s role in coordinating government matters has been officially assigned to Cabinet Secretary for Interior Dr. Fred Matiangi.
