Migori County Assembly faced chaos when a meeting of ODM-aligned Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) was interrupted by a group called "Sangwenya," known for suppressing dissent. The group blocked all access points to the venue and threatened to confront anyone attempting to impeach Majority Leader Malan Ogega.
Police removed Deputy Speaker George Omamba and seven MCAs from the scene for their safety. Omamba later told The Star that the incident reflected a broader pattern of intimidation, citing a similar 2017 event where county government vehicles were used to block the assembly gate.
"How can someone not employed by the county use its vehicles to intimidate MCAs?" Omamba questioned, calling for a police investigation. The deputy speaker, who has served as a key ally to Governor Okoth Obado since 2013, claimed the meeting was about discussing a supplementary budget, not impeachment efforts.
A youth involved in the disruption warned that attempts to remove Obado and Speaker Boaz Okoth would face strong resistance. Migori PGC chairman Graham Kagali downplayed the political implications, stating the gathering was informal.
Suna East Police Commander Patrick Macharia confirmed the investigation is ongoing, stating those found responsible would face legal consequences. No arrests have been made as of now.
