How SD-WAN Has Finally Solved the Last Mile Problem

Published on July 31, 2019

The last mile has long been a challenge for WAN engineers, with inefficiencies plaguing industries from transport and logistics to urban planning and old analog POTS lines. Enterprise WAN has struggled with last mile optimization, but the advent of SDWaaS has finally provided a viable global solution.

SDWaaS, or SD-WAN as a Service, offers a robust and converged network infrastructure with advanced monitoring and high-availability functionality. This enables enterprises to overcome last mile problems on the WAN, providing enhanced connectivity and reliability.

One of the major advantages of SDWaaS is its global presence, with Points of Presence (PoPs) strategically placed across the globe. These PoPs provide enhanced connectivity in the last mile and make up the SLA-backed global backbone that has earned SDWaaS a reputation for reliability.

SDWaaS addresses last mile challenges in several ways, including reducing packet loss, improving last mile resilience, and reducing latency and improving throughput.

Intelligent Forward Error Correction (FEC) and packet duplication are used to reduce packet loss, while redundancy and active-active configurations improve last mile resilience. SDWaaS also delivers traffic shaping and performance-enhancing features such as Quality of Service (QoS), bandwidth throttling, and Policy-based Routing (PbR).

Dynamic PoP selection and real-time updates ensure that the network automatically selects the best PoP and delivers the best performance possible.

The last mile has finally been cracked, and SDWaaS offers enterprises a new approach to WAN connectivity that leads to significant improvements in the last mile.
