On July 31, 2019, Mauricio Pochettino sparked controversy after Tottenham's 1-0 Audi Cup win over Real Madrid.
During the post-match press conference, Pochettino expressed his frustration, stating, “Maybe the club need to change my title description now because my job now is to coach the team.”
He further emphasized that transfers were not his responsibility, saying, “I am not in charge of this. I know nothing about the situation of my players, I am only coaching them, trying to get the best from them.”
Pochettino's comments came as Tottenham struggled to secure new signings, with Manchester United reportedly ahead in talks for Juventus forward Paulo Dybala.
Despite the transfer woes, Tottenham's Harry Kane scored the winning goal, his second in three matches.
Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane acknowledged his team's struggles, saying, “We’re not ready yet, we do have some problems with some injuries, but we have to look to the future, we want to win a game, that’s our next goal.”
