On July 31, 2019, Vivo, a smartphone maker and sister company to OPPO, expanded its presence in Africa by launching its Y series smartphones in the UAE, Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.

The move is part of Vivo's strategy to tap into the growing demand for smartphones in emerging markets, where mobile phones are increasingly becoming the primary trading tool.

According to Counterpoint Research, the smartphone market in the Middle East and Africa grew by 6% year-on-year (YoY) in Q1 2019, while the feature phone market decreased by 6% (YoY) during the same period.

Transsion Holdings, the parent company of TECNO, Infinix, and iTel, has faced increased competition from players like Huawei, Samsung, and OPPO in the mid-range market consumer segment.

“Since our first entry into international markets in 2014, we have been dedicated to understanding the needs of consumers through in-depth research in an effort to bring innovative products and services to meet changing lifestyle needs,” said Spark Ni, Senior Vice President of Vivo.

The Y series, which includes the Y12, Y15, and Y17, features a 89% screen-to-body ratio, AI Triple Camera, and a Magical Color Fusion design, making it a perfect blend of technology and style.
